Big Data - The Answer to Financial "Systemic" Risks
The Financial Institution’s Challenge
After the financial crisis of 2008, several reforms were put into place to reduce the “systemic risk” a bank poses to the global financial system. For the bank's’ business lines, regulators, and participants, the goal was unanimous - never again could a bank be allowed to become “too big to fail”.
Guiding policies and procedures were introduced to measure the exposure to possible losses, after which remediating action would be taken against those risks, or the cash and/or collateral kept in reserve would be increased. However, measuring a bank’s exposure and reconciling information across the data silos within the organization was a daunting challenge.
Our client’s derivatives business faced challenges ranging from adapting to the complexity and the high cost associated with their trillion-dollar business.
The Clovity Solution
Clovity leveraged it's Studios’ deep understanding of IoT, Mobility, AI-based decision making, Core Banking, and CRM to roll-out a system that automated tracking, push notifications, and real-time changing of credit limit.
Clovity’s engagement began with defining the design, and graduated to building and maintaining the data architecture that fully supported the financial institution’s risk data aggregation capabilities and risk reporting practices, not only in normal times but also during a crisis.
Clovity built and deployed a new operational data store based SQL database with XML support and integrated trade data without ETL delays. We also streamlined the workflow processes, while optimizing the existing architecture.
The new platform allowed large user groups to perform structured and one-off queries over data. The system integrated with multiple applications and made it easier to accommodate newer changes to the structure of trades without downtime or schema changes. Furthermore, it ensured a streamlined end-to-end trade settlement process. The end result was a successful and growing deployment that powered more trades than before and facilitated updates in data in nanoseconds.

Accelerating Infrastructure and Application Migration to the Secure Cloud
Healthcare Provider’s Challenge
A leading healthcare provider in the U.S. wanted to embark on their cloud transformation by migrating their Applications and Infrastructure to a HIPAA compliant Cloud platform. Their system, comprised of about 200 servers, needed to be securely migrated from on-premises to the cloud. Like many in this industry, our client had understandable concerns about security, PHI and PII data.
Clovity’s Solution
Clovity has a deep knowledge of various Cloud platforms due to our firm’s Cloud-agnostic nature. Our specialization in Azure, AWS and Google Cloud allowed the team to map the requirements of the client to the various features offered by the Cloud platforms and then define an accelerated migration roadmap customized to their needs. Clovity understands not only the nuances of data privacy in the Healthcare Industry, but also accounts for security threats associated with Cloud services, and need for high performance plus availability. In result, providing best-in-breed tailored solution being provided to the client.
The first step in Clovity’s process was to perform a Business Case Evaluation which included both ROI and TCO analysis coupled with a cloud readiness assessment. Within the cloud readiness assessment we performed both portfolio and application assessments, created reference architecture, and developed an economic model. Once all these assessments had taken place, Clovity recommended Microsoft’s Azure Cloud as the HIPAA compliant platform that provides maximum value to the client and fulfills the business’ requirements.
After the platform was decided on, Clovity initiated security assessments at each level of the organization. By looking at policy, environment, infrastructure, systems, platforms and data from a security perspective we were able to remedy any issues that could arise during or once the migration had taken place. Having ensured a secure environment, Clovity set off leveraging its Cloud experts and their deep migration expertise on the accelerated roadmap.
As part of our accelerated road map, Clovity used our pre-built environment provisioning patterns and templates to automate many process and ensure quicker deployment. We then enabled self-service and automated deployment of application to the private cloud again utilizing our pre-built deployment blueprints, templates and scripts.
Clovity then built a comprehensive recovery and business continuity plan. Our CloudOps team utilized Azure monitoring and Azure Compliance Manager to ensure a complete disaster recovery plan.
At the end of the project the client was ecstatic to find Clovity had optimized cost, set up a highly secured environment, effectively utilized Azure’s OOB features to speed up implementation, provided a highly scalable architecture, brought internal templates in the pilot phase to facilitate migration of remaining clients, and created a robust transfer-operate model.
Drive-thru Restaurant IoT
Sophisticated Retail IoT System sees 75% Reduction in Data Transmission Times and Achieves Real Time Data Utilization
The Company’s Challenge
Our client’s goal was to significantly reduce the amount of time it took for their system to process data from its complex sensor network and visualize that data for their end customers. At its current configuration the retail store owner had to be in front of the machine to interact with the data and lacked access to data in real-time because batch analysis took 24 hours to process. Additionally, they lacked access to simplified monitoring tools especially when monitoring and managing multiple locations, as well as each new implementation required similar amounts of work to spin up at each new location.
Clovity’s Solution
Clovity leveraged it's Studios’ deep understanding of complex IoT systems, Analytic Platforms, Real-Time data visualization techniques, data storage, and our extensive experience in the Retail market to upgrade our client’s system to ensure up to the moment tracking of all aspects for their end-client’s locations.
The solutions required a three pronged approach to ensure the functionality that our client’s customers desired to run their businesses in real time. Our first step was to create a iOS and Android application where store owners can monitor and analyze the flow of cars through the drive-thrus of their restaurants. Alerts on large customer volumes of 10 or more cars, precise totals of customers utilizing the drive thru in a 24 hour period, multiple restaurant location tracking centralized on one application, and real time push notifications allowing them to interface with the system quickly, were all new features that were added to build out our client’s product offering. This first step began to offer the ability to manage store utilization, provide better customer service, and accelerate data analysis and monitoring capabilities.
The second prong of this project required Clovity to reduce the amount of time the DTDS process, which is the process of accepting data and sending it to the Azure cloud, by modifying their CU 50 sensor product to send expandable card data to Azure directly rather than coming in via the DTDS. This helped to significantly reduce the refresh interval and time gap between actual data and real time data to enable up to the moment monitoring. Clovity reduced this time by 75%, from 20 seconds down to 5 seconds.
The third part required Clovity to build a web interface that monitors if the system is working correctly remotely. It can monitor all CU50 devices, gateways, and PUCs for optimal system diagnostics. The PUC was a sensor that denotes cars passing through a certain area, while the CU50 would communicate with these devices and collect data from numerous PUCs. The CU50 would then pass that information along to the gateway and up to the cloud. A large challenge was configuring the frequency for the CU50/40, the report rate, the sample rate and the baseline filter to accommodate. Each location needed to be manually configured posing a significant logistical challenge for implementation. All data had to be localized at the store location.
In order to make these actions remote, Clovity created the ability for the CU50 data to quickly be transmitted to the cloud so that it could be monitored by owners and managers in real-time regardless of their location. The PUCs were now able to be monitored remotely by utilizing the UI Web Page Interface that Clovity’s team had created. With this added functionality, store managers were able to optimize resources to deliver optimal customer service as well as diagnose any network issues remotely.
Through their partnership with Clovity our client was able to take their product to the next echelon of connectivity and enable it to all occur in real time. By reducing the latency in their system, our client’s customers can now manage their business effectively from anywhere with a connection.
Technology Product & Digital/Cloud
Clovity’s helps large ITSM company implement ‘Infrastructure as Code’ Automation Techniques Reducing Operational Costs by 30% and Increasing Accuracy by 45%
The ITSM’s Challenge
A large US based ITSM and Data Storage provider wanted to create a number of automated processes to ensure quicker response to their clients, reduce human error, and bolster security in number of sectors. Initially, many of the internal ordering actions were manual, being done through basic portals, spreadsheets, and emails. This left the possibility for human error to affect the ordering and provisioning of server requests.
Furthermore, as new servers were being added, architecture had to be inserted manually making each new request taking extensive human capital to create every time new environments were partitioned. They required a better way to spin up new servers quickly and accurately as need required.
Lastly, their customers were having to manually request reports when desired, which then was taking up internal resources to fulfill. Without a way for clients to access the information themselves, further tasks and backlogs were created to respond in a timely manner.
The Clovity Solution
Clovity leveraged it’s Digital, Automation and AI Studios’ to develop robust code that would ensure many of the traditionally manual tasks could now be deployed automatically without additional human tasks. To start, engineers developed a simplistic AI to assist in coordinating shipping, handling and packaging which were initially managed through emails between departments. By creating reminders and automated processes around these task SLAs were reduced to under 2 days with almost 100% accuracy. Ensuring each service request was promptly acted on the client was quickly able to increase their customer satisfaction levels.
Next, Clovity’s technologists set to work building a robust solution for IaC server partitioning by leveraging automation technologies like Python, Django, Ruby, and Shell Scripting. As each new environment needed to be spun up, servers could utilize the main manifest, validate against the parameters and automatically configure each new rack of devices while simultaneously flagging any potential issues. The next part of the solution was how to upload assets to server through automated processes. Architects simply required a design and configuration settings which would create a template. This template could then be uploaded on to the portal. As each new server would be created, it would ping the portal and download the parameters without additional work.
The final aspect of the solution involved allowing greater insights on each customers network performance to be accessed without needing to contact our client directly. To ensure our customer’s clients could access reports on demand Clovity’s engineers built a tool kit and web app allowing individuals with the right credentials to expose system data. A hexadecimal token generated using a custom algorithm is validated by the system. Once a client’s token is validated and their system allowances have been verified for a match, they can export reports in JSON, PDF or Excel formats.
In addition, a new job manager functionality was introduced that is able to do device specific tasks like releasing new updates and job runs periodically or manually as desired. This module deals with the configuration and maintenance of various jobs which are a part of different vendor specific devices, bios, and firmware. It is an intelligent module which is capable of allowing the admin to monitor the job status for each client’s environment.
By introducing newly automated IaC processes for server set up and partitioning, plus increasing intelligence for operational tasks within logistical divisions of the company, Clovity’s client was able to significantly reduce their operational costs while simultaneously creating a consistent customer experience.
